Occupational Health and Safety Regulations require that all electrical equipment that is used for construction work or used in a hostile operating environment (that is where the safe operation of the electrical equipment could be affected) must be tested and tagged by an authorized tester and tagger.

Office workers do not need to be concerned as the electrical appliances in offices are most often stationary and not endangered externally. Construction workers, labourers, tradesmen and workers who work in factories where electrical tools are used and where electrical equipment is used in a “hostile” environment should know that all electrical appliances should undergo testing and tagging. Some examples of electrical appliances that require testing and tagging include:

-         Power tools

-         Portable lighting

-         Pedestal lighting

-         Heaters

-         Extension cords

-         Computer power cables

-         TV’s & videos

-         RMIT owned computers (non-leased)

-         Battery chargers

-         Laptop computers (including those leased)

-         Staff owned electrical equipment

-         Photocopiers

-         Isolation transformers

-         Portable RCD’s

-         Portable outlet devices

-         Microscopes

To recognize an appliance that has been tested look for an electrical tag that will detail the outcome of the test. If an appliance has failed it will have a Caution-Do Not Use- Out of Service electrical tag on it.

If you feel that there is an electrical appliance that is situated dangerously in your workplace be sure to let your occupational health and safety office so that they can take to correct protective action.

Correct testing and tagging is beneficial to all involved. It not only protects workers against malfunctioning tools it is also good for the safety of the business. For example, testing and tagging of appliances:

-         assist you in complying with OH&S Regulations

-         prepare you for WorkCover inspections

-         help you reduce Insurance Premiums

-         and, importantly identify and minimize risks in the workplace
